If you travel by Indian Railways, especially in sleeper or reserved coaches, this update is important for you.

The Kota Division of West Central Railway has issued a new advisory to reduce frequent disputes between passengers over the middle berth.

The new clarification mainly focuses on when the middle berth can be used and how passengers should follow the rules to avoid inconvenience.

Why Middle Berth Is Causing Daily Conflicts

Railway officials say that one of the most common reasons for arguments on trains is the middle berth.

Many passengers open it during the day and continue sleeping, which causes trouble for those sitting on the lower berth.

To prevent such issues, the Railways has once again reminded passengers about the official rules regarding berth usage.

These rules are already part of Railway Board guidelines, but are often ignored or misunderstood during travel.

Fixed Timing for Middle Berth Use

According to Railway Board rules (Commercial Circular No. 60/2017), the middle berth can only be used during specific hours:

It can be opened only between 10 PM and 6 AM

After 6 AM, it must be folded back and kept closed

This rule ensures that passengers sitting on the lower berth can use their seats comfortably during the day.

Railway officials have clearly stated that following this timing is mandatory for all passengers.

Rules for Other Berths in the Coach

The advisory also explains how other berths should be used during travel:

Lower berth passengers must share seating space during the day

Upper berth passengers can use their berth throughout the day

Side lower berths may need to be shared with RAC passengers

Side upper berths must return to their berth at night

These rules are meant to ensure fair usage of space for all passengers in the coach.

TTE Has Final Authority in Case of Disputes

Railways has also clarified that if any dispute arises between passengers, the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) will have the final authority to resolve the issue.

Passengers must follow the TTE’s instructions to avoid further conflict during the journey.

Focus on Passenger Comfort and Discipline

The Railway authorities have appealed to passengers to follow these rules properly, especially keeping in mind the comfort of senior citizens, disabled passengers, sick travellers, and pregnant women.

By following simple guidelines, passengers can avoid unnecessary arguments and ensure a smoother and more comfortable journey for everyone.
