In a significant development aimed at fostering stronger ties between India and the European Union (EU), Indian citizens can now apply for long validity multiple-entry Schengen visas.
The EU announced this transformative decision on Monday,
reflecting its commitment to facilitating travel and enhancing diplomatic relations with India.
Understanding the Visa Changes:
The European Commission, in its latest move, introduced specific rules on issuing multiple-entry visas to Indian nationals,
offering more favorable terms compared to the existing Visa Code.
Referred to as a ‘cascade’ arrangement, this new visa scheme allows Indian residents to apply for Schengen visas with extended validity,
contingent upon a positive travel history.
According to the EU statement, eligible Indian citizens with a track record of two previous visas within three years can benefit from long-term,
multiple-entry Schengen visas, spanning several years.
Visa Duration:
Typically, if sufficient validity remains in the passport after a two-year visa, applicants may receive a five-year visa.
During the validity period, visa holders enjoy privileges akin to those of visa-exempt citizens,
facilitating seamless travel within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
However, it’s important to note that Schengen visas do not confer work rights and are intended solely for travel purposes.
Accessible European Countries:
The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states such as Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain, along with non-EU nations like Switzerland and Norway.
This extended visa validity extends to countries like Poland, Portugal, and Sweden, among others, offering Indian travelers unprecedented ease of access to diverse European destinations.
