The Central Government has decided to remove temporary restrictions on petrol and diesel sales from July 1, bringing relief to transport operators, industries, and commercial fuel users.

The move comes after a review of the country’s fuel supply situation, which showed that fuel availability has now stabilised.

With this, emergency controls introduced earlier this month will no longer be needed.

Why Were Fuel Restrictions Imposed?

On June 12, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had introduced temporary restrictions on fuel sales due to concerns over global supply disruptions.

These concerns were linked to tensions in West Asia, which created uncertainty in international energy markets.

To prevent shortages and misuse, the government had:

Restricted commercial and industrial buyers from purchasing fuel freely at retail pumps

Limited diesel purchases to 200 litres per vehicle or customer per day

Taken steps to prevent hoarding, black marketing, and fuel diversion

The aim was to ensure that regular consumers continued to receive uninterrupted fuel supply.

What Changes from July 1?

With the restrictions now lifted, normal fuel sale operations will resume across the country.

Key changes include:

Commercial and industrial buyers can again purchase fuel without restrictions

The 200-litre daily diesel limit has been removed

Transport companies, industries, and bulk users can buy fuel normally from retail outlets

The Ministry has confirmed that fuel supply across India is now stable, allowing a return to regular distribution systems.

Relief for Transport and Industrial Sectors

The decision is expected to bring major relief to sectors that depend heavily on fuel for daily operations.

Truck operators, bus services, logistics companies, telecom operators, and manufacturing units were among those most affected by the restrictions.

Industry experts say the rollback will improve operational efficiency and reduce logistical difficulties faced over the past few weeks.

For most regular consumers, however, there will be little to no visible change, as fuel availability remained steady even during the restriction period.

How the Situation Stabilised

According to the government, the temporary measures helped maintain fuel availability during a period of global uncertainty.

Public sector oil companies continued supplying petrol and diesel throughout the restriction period, even while absorbing higher costs due to global price fluctuations.

After reviewing the situation, authorities concluded that the emergency steps were no longer required.

Return to Normal Fuel Supply System

With the withdrawal of restrictions, India’s fuel distribution system is now back to normal.

Retail fuel stations can operate without special limits, and commercial users can resume regular fuel purchases.

The government has also expressed confidence in the strength of India’s fuel supply chain to handle any future global disruptions without strict controls.
