If you have old unpaid traffic e-challans, there is some relief for vehicle owners.

The state government has launched a one-time traffic challan settlement scheme that allows people to clear pending challans by paying a reduced amount.

Under this scheme, many traffic violations can now be settled by paying only 50% of the original fine amount.

The Transport Department officially issued the notification on Thursday.

Big Relief for People With Pending E-Challans

The new settlement scheme mainly targets challans that have remained unpaid for more than 90 days.

Under the initiative, motorists can settle old traffic violation cases at reduced rates through the National Lok Adalat.

The scheme has already come into effect and will continue till the financial year 2026-27.

This move is expected to benefit millions of vehicle owners who are struggling with long-pending fines.

The government also hopes the scheme will:

Reduce pending challan cases

Increase revenue collection

Lower the burden on courts and departments

Most importantly, people may also avoid legal action or driving license suspension caused by unpaid challans.

Which Traffic Violations Get Relief?

The biggest relief has been given in common traffic offences such as:

Riding without a helmet

Driving without a seatbelt

Triple riding on bikes

Driving without insurance

Driving without a license

For many of these offences, the fine amount has been reduced by up to 50%.

However, some serious traffic violations are not getting major relief.

Cases like:

Jumping red lights

Talking on mobile phones while driving

have either received very little discount or no relaxation at all.

More Than 2.67 Lakh Challans Still Pending

According to reports, over 2.67 lakh traffic challans are currently pending across the state.

E-challans are being generated through traffic cameras installed at toll plazas and in several cities, including Patna.

Officials say the highest number of pending fines are related to helmet violations, seatbelt offences, and triple riding, which is why these categories received the biggest discounts under the new scheme.

Reduced Fine Amounts Under the Scheme

Here’s how much people may need to pay after the discount:

Traffic ViolationOriginal FineAmount After Discount
Without helmetRs 1,000Rs 500
Without seatbeltRs 1,000Rs 500
Triple ridingRs 1,000Rs 500
Without driving licenseRs 5,000Rs 2,500
Uninsured vehicleRs 2,000Rs 1,000

Why This Scheme Matters

For many people, unpaid challans slowly turn into a bigger financial and legal problem over time.

This one-time settlement scheme gives vehicle owners a chance to clear old dues at lower costs without facing extra penalties later.

Officials believe the scheme will encourage more people to settle pending challans quickly while also improving overall traffic rule compliance in the future.
