The US Department of State’s Consular Affairs has reminded travelers to be REAL ID compliant before boarding domestic flights or visiting certain federal facilities.

Although REAL ID has been operational since May 7, 2025, starting February 1, 2026, travelers who don’t carry a REAL ID (or another acceptable ID like a passport) will have to pay $45 to verify their identity through TSA ConfirmID.

Acceptable Identification for Travel

For domestic flights, you need one valid form of ID:

REAL ID

Or another acceptable alternative, such as a passport

A passport book or passport card works for domestic travel, but passport cards cannot be used for international flights.

REAL IDs are designed to make identification harder to forge, reducing the risk of travel delays.

Travelers are advised to get a REAL ID or carry an acceptable alternative before flying.

How to Recognize a REAL ID

A REAL ID is issued by compliant states and includes a star marking (or “Enhanced” label).

This ID is needed for:

Domestic flights

Accessing federal facilities, including TSA airport checkpoints

Noncompliant IDs are clearly marked and may be issued for various reasons unrelated to lawful presence.

Holding a noncompliant card does not automatically indicate undocumented status.

Key Takeaways for Travelers

If you plan to fly domestically or visit federal facilities, make sure your ID is REAL ID compliant or carry a passport.

Check your driver’s license or state ID for a star or “Enhanced” marking.

Travelers without compliant ID will face additional verification fees and possible travel delays.
