The government has taken a major step to improve the safety and working conditions of gig workers.
Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has urged leading delivery platforms like Blinkit, Zepto, Zomato, and Swiggy to remove the mandatory 10-minute delivery deadline, which has long raised concerns about rider safety and work pressure.
This move aims to protect delivery partners from unrealistic timelines that often force them to rush on busy roads.
Delivery Platforms Begin Removing 10-Minute Promises
According to media reports, Blinkit has already acted on the government’s advice.
The company has removed the 10-minute delivery claim from its branding.
Blinkit also changed its main tagline from “10,000+ products delivered in 10 minutes” to “30,000+ products delivered at your doorstep.”
Other quick-commerce platforms are expected to follow soon.
The issue of strict delivery timelines has been under intense public and political discussion over the past few weeks.
Raghav Chadha Highlights Gig Worker Challenges
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has been actively raising concerns about the pressure faced by delivery partners.
In Parliament, he demanded stronger regulations for app-based delivery services and called for fair pay, social security benefits, and dignity for gig workers.
He emphasized that gig workers should not be forced to risk their lives to meet aggressive delivery targets.
MP Takes to the Streets to Show Solidarity
To highlight the ground reality, Raghav Chadha recently spent a day working as a delivery partner in Delhi.
Wearing a quick-commerce jacket and riding through traffic, he delivered parcels to customers to understand the challenges firsthand.
He shared the video on social media, saying he wanted to experience the life of gig workers beyond policy discussions and boardrooms.
Support for Nationwide Gig Worker Strike
Chadha also supported a nationwide symbolic strike by gig workers on New Year’s Eve.
Thousands of delivery partners across multiple states logged off apps or reduced work to demand better wages, safer working conditions, and social security.
The protest led to delays and cancellations on one of the busiest delivery days of the year.
Chadha called the demands legitimate, noting that gig workers play a vital role in India’s urban economy.
