Aadhaar: If your child’s Aadhaar card was made before the age of 5, there’s an important update for you.
UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has changed the Aadhaar rules for children.
Now, it is mandatory to update the child’s biometrics—like fingerprints and eye scan—after they turn 7 years old. If you fail to do this, the child’s Aadhaar can be deactivated.
UIDAI Issues New Rule
UIDAI recently announced that it has started sending SMS alerts to mobile numbers linked to children’s Aadhaar cards.
These messages are to remind parents to update their child’s biometrics once they turn 7.
If your child got an Aadhaar card made before turning 5, you now must update the biometrics after the child crosses 7 years of age.
Why Is This Update Required?
UIDAI explained that when Aadhaar is issued to children under 5 years, no biometrics (fingerprints or iris scan) are taken.
The card is created based only on the child’s photo, name, date of birth, gender, and parents’ documents.
New Aadhaar Rules for Children
At age 5, the child’s first biometric update should be done.
If this is not done by age 7, UIDAI may temporarily block or deactivate the Aadhaar number.
So, updating biometrics after turning 7 is now compulsory.
Fee for Updating Aadhaar
If the biometric update is done between ages 5 and 7, it is free of cost.
If the update is delayed and done after age 7, then a fee of ₹100 will be charged.
Having an updated Aadhaar is important for the child to access services like school admissions, scholarships, exam forms, and other government benefits.
So, make sure to get the Aadhaar updated on time to avoid any problems.
