YouTube launches Gemini-Powered ‘Ask’ feature

YouTube is taking a big step toward making video watching more interactive.

The platform has started rolling out a new “Ask” button, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, that lets users directly engage with the videos they’re watching.

With this new feature, viewers can ask questions about the video to get quick summaries, topic explanations, or even take short quizzes — all without leaving the page.

Just like the Gemini chat experience, the feature also provides suggested prompts to help users get started easily.

Currently, the “Ask” button appears below the video player, between the Share and Download options, and is marked with the Gemini icon.

It’s available on select English-language videos across Android, iPhone, and desktop, giving users an AI-powered way to explore videos more deeply.

How YouTube’s “Ask” Feature Works

According to YouTube, the tool is designed to make learning from videos more dynamic and interactive.

Instead of pausing a video or switching tabs to search for context, viewers can now simply ask Gemini directly about the topic.

Powered by Google’s large language models (LLMs), the feature generates context-aware answers by pulling information from both YouTube and the wider web.

This means you can quickly understand concepts, explore related topics, or dive deeper into subjects covered in the video — all within the same viewing window.

Using the feature is simple:

Tap the “Ask” button (Gemini star icon) under the video.

Select a suggested prompt or type your own question.

Chat with Gemini and explore the video’s subject in more detail.

You can also rate Gemini’s responses using thumbs up or down.

A Smarter Way to Watch and Learn

By integrating AI directly into the YouTube experience, Google is turning passive video watching into an active learning experience.

Whether you’re watching a tech review, an educational video, or a documentary, the Gemini-powered “Ask” button makes it easier to understand complex topics and stay engaged — without ever leaving the platform.
