Will Senior Citizens get Train Ticket Discounts again? Check Latest Update

In the Lok Sabha, opposition leaders have renewed their demand for the restoration of train ticket discounts for senior citizens.

Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan (Pappu Yadav) and Trinamool Congress MP June Malia have urged the central government to reinstate the fare concessions that were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Status of Senior Citizen Discounts

Before the pandemic, senior citizens enjoyed a 50% discount on train fares. This concession was temporarily suspended, and there has been no official announcement on its restoration.

MP June Malia highlighted the need for this discount to be reinstated, citing its importance for elderly travelers.

Other Key Demands

Restoration of Discounts for Journalists: Pappu Yadav also called for the reinstatement of fare concessions for journalists.

Facilities and Safety Enhancements: He emphasized the need for separate toilets for women on trains and an increase in general coaches.

Railway Safety and Infrastructure: Several MPs, including Joba Manjhi and Mallu Ravi, stressed the need for improved railway safety and infrastructure. There were calls for a high-level inquiry into recent railway accidents and better reservation systems for SC, ST, and OBC communities in railway jobs.

Government’s Response and Future Plans

Improvements Under Modi Government: BJP’s Rajesh Mishra acknowledged improvements in railway services under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, including enhanced rail safety and cleanliness.

New Railway Lines and Stations: BJP’s Anurag Sharma and Shiv Sena MP Dhairyasheel Sambhajirave Mane pushed for new railway lines and the reopening of small stations closed during the pandemic.

Policy and Rehabilitation: Shiv Sena (UBT) member Arvind Ganpat Sawant called for a robust policy regarding railway lands and proper rehabilitation for families affected by demolitions.
