WhatsApp is introducing a big privacy update that will change how users connect. Until now, when you chatted with someone—whether in a group or with an unknown contact—your phone number was visible.
Soon, WhatsApp will allow users to chat without showing their phone number, similar to apps like Telegram and Signal, by using usernames instead.
How the Username System Will Work
According to a report by WABetaInfo, this feature is being tested in WhatsApp’s iOS beta version 25.17.10.70. Users will be able to create a username visible to others.
When you start a chat with a new contact or someone unknown in a group, they will see only your username, not your phone number.
Username Rules and Privacy Benefits
Usernames can be 3 to 30 characters long and include lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and dots.
WhatsApp aims to enhance “individual privacy,” giving users control over how much of their identity they share with others.
Why WhatsApp Is Making This Change
So far, WhatsApp has identified users by their phone numbers. But as privacy concerns grow, Meta is adding more control features to WhatsApp.
This update is especially useful for users who use WhatsApp for professional, public, or group interactions and want to keep their phone number private.
When Will This Feature Be Available?
The username feature is currently in testing and not yet available to the public. After testing is complete, it will be released for both Android and iOS users.
While WhatsApp hasn’t announced an official launch date, reports suggest it will be available in the second half of this year.
