WhatsApp is regularly updating its app to make it safer and more trustworthy for users.
Recently, the company introduced new safety features to protect users from scams and fake accounts. These updates are expected to help users avoid fraud more easily.
Protection from Unknown Group Invites
According to WABetaInfo, if someone adds you to a WhatsApp group and that person is not in your contact list, WhatsApp will now show a safety overview screen. This screen will display the following:
Who added you to the group
Whether that person is in your contacts
Whether other group members are saved in your phonebook
Until you choose to stay in the group, WhatsApp will automatically mute all its notifications. This change is designed to protect users from spam and phishing attacks.
New Alerts in One-on-One Chats
WhatsApp has also noticed that scammers sometimes connect with people through other social media platforms
and then move them to WhatsApp to trick them. To stop this, WhatsApp is testing a new safety alert for chats.
Now, if you start chatting with someone who is not in your contacts, a pop-up will appear. It will show some basic details about that person so you can decide whether to continue the conversation.
Strict Action Against Fake Accounts
WhatsApp has announced that it recently removed over 6.8 million fake and scam accounts from its platform. This proves the company is taking strong action to keep users safe.
While user privacy and end-to-end encryption will always be maintained, WhatsApp said it will continue to take necessary steps to improve user safety even further.
