WhatsApp Introduces One-Tap Security against Cyberattacks

WhatsApp has introduced a new security feature for its millions of users worldwide to help protect them from cyberattacks. Called “Strict Account Settings,” this feature activates multiple security defenses at once with just a single tap.

WhatsApp is now the third major company to offer such a feature, following Apple and Google. Although WhatsApp announced this feature some time ago, it is now being rolled out to users.

How the Feature Works

When Strict Account Settings is enabled, several protections are activated simultaneously, making it much harder for hackers to target users. The feature will:

Block files and attachments from unknown numbers.

Disable link previews that appear alongside URLs.

Silence calls from unknown numbers.

WhatsApp says that these three features are often exploited for surveillance and advanced cyberattacks, and this update provides users with better protection against such threats.

How to Enable the Feature

To turn on this feature, users should:

Open Settings in WhatsApp.

Tap on Privacy.

Go to the Advanced section, where the new feature will appear.

Since the rollout is gradual, it may take some time before the feature appears on all devices. WhatsApp has designed this feature specifically for journalists, activists, and public figures, who face higher risks of cyberattacks and espionage.

Similar Features by Apple and Google

In 2022, Apple introduced Lockdown Mode, which activates multiple defenses such as disabling message attachments, link previews, and restricting web browsing.

Google also launched Advanced Protection Mode last year, which works in a similar way to Apple’s Lockdown Mode.
