WhatsApp has rolled out an important update for voice chats in groups. Earlier, this feature was only available for large groups.
But now, even small groups with just 3–4 members can use voice chat. So, you don’t need a big group anymore to enjoy this feature.
What Is “Audio Hangouts”?
WhatsApp has named this new voice chat feature “Audio Hangouts.” It lets group members start an audio conversation without making a regular group call.
It works like a small, private podcast where anyone in the group can join or leave at any time.
When a voice chat starts, it won’t ring like a normal call. Instead, group members will simply get a notification.
The chat stays visible at the bottom of the WhatsApp screen, making it easy to access and control.
Even new people who join the group later will be able to see the ongoing voice chat and join in.
How to Use the Voice Chat Feature
To start a voice chat in a group:
Go to the group chat.
Swipe up from the bottom of the chat box.
Hold for a few seconds, and the voice chat will begin.
Why This Feature Matters
WhatsApp hasn’t given a specific reason for launching this now, but it confirmed that voice chats will be protected with end-to-end encryption—just like regular chats and calls.
Features like this were already seen in apps such as Clubhouse and X Space. Now, WhatsApp is offering a similar experience, allowing users to talk casually with friends or team members without the need for formal calls.
This update is especially helpful if you want quick voice chats in small groups without the pressure of calling everyone directly.
