WhatsApp bans over 84 Lakh Indian Accounts in a Month: Here’s Why

WhatsApp has made a significant move to tackle fraud. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, announced that it banned 84 lakh accounts in one month.

According to its latest transparency report, the company stated that between August 1 and August 31, it had blocked 84.5 lakh WhatsApp accounts in India. Here’s more about this action.

Over 1 million accounts were removed right away

The report highlights that 16.6 lakh accounts were banned immediately for serious rule violations, while the remaining accounts were removed after investigations.

Additionally, around 16 lakh accounts were identified and removed before any complaints were filed.

The company also mentioned that in August 2024, it received complaints from 10,707 users, and 93% of these complaints were addressed right away.

Meta deletes accounts for these reasons

Meta deletes user accounts for various reasons. If a user engages in bulk messaging, spamming, fraud, or spreading false information, their account is blocked for violating rules.

Additionally, if a user is found engaging in any illegal activity, their account is immediately removed.

The company also takes action against accounts upon receiving user complaints. User complaints help the company easily identify accounts that are causing harm.

India has the largest user base of WhatsApp

India is WhatsApp’s largest market globally, with 535 million users. Indian users spend more time on WhatsApp than users in other countries.

Following India, Brazil and the United States have the next highest number of users.
