WhatsApp adds In-app translation for iPhone users

WhatsApp is rolling out its in-app translation feature for iPhone users, just weeks after it arrived on Android.

The update (version 25.28.74) allows users to instantly translate messages in 21 different languages, making cross-language conversations smoother than ever.

Meta says the feature will reach all iPhone users in the coming weeks, along with another exciting addition — support for Live Photos.

How to Use WhatsApp’s Translation Tool

Using the feature is simple. Just press and hold any message, tap “More…”, and select “Translate.”

The first time you do this, WhatsApp will ask you to choose your source and target languages and download the necessary language packs.

Once downloaded, translations can even work without an internet connection.

You can manage your downloaded languages anytime by going to Settings > Translate > Downloaded Languages, where you can add or remove languages as needed.

What You Can Translate (and What You Can’t)

The translation tool works across individual and group chats, but it doesn’t translate media like documents, contacts, stickers, GIFs, or locations.

To download language packs, you’ll also need a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection and enough storage space on your device.

Currently, WhatsApp supports 21 languages including Hindi, English (UK and US), French, German, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, and Korean.

However, availability may depend on your iOS version.

Breaking Language Barriers

For WhatsApp’s global audience, this new feature is a major step toward making communication more inclusive.

It eliminates the need for third-party translation apps and fits into Meta’s larger AI-driven vision — following features like AI-powered message summaries and writing suggestions.

With this rollout, chatting with anyone, anywhere in the world, just got a lot easier.
