WhatsApp has finally started rolling out a much-awaited feature.

The platform is introducing a “username” system, similar to Instagram.

With this update, users can connect and chat without sharing their phone numbers.

At the moment, this feature is available to only a limited number of users.

However, it is expected to roll out to more people soon.

No Need to Share Your Phone Number

This new feature focuses on improving user privacy.

Earlier, users had to share their mobile number to connect with others on WhatsApp.

Now, they can simply use a username instead.

This is especially useful for people who want to keep their personal number private while still using the app.

Create a Unique Username for Your Account

With this feature, users can choose a unique username.

Once set, others can search and contact you using only that username.

This gives users better control over their privacy and visibility.

The feature took time to launch because WhatsApp wanted to ensure a smooth and secure experience.

How to Set Your Username

Currently, the feature is in testing and available to selected users.

If you have access, follow these steps:

Open WhatsApp

Go to your profile settings

Look for the “Username” option

Create and save your username

After this, you can share your username instead of your phone number.

Rules for Creating a Username

Users must follow some simple rules while choosing a username:

It should not start with “www.”

It should not include domain endings like .com or .net

It must contain at least one letter

Allowed characters include lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), dot (.), and underscore (_)

Username length must be between 3 and 35 characters

What This Means for Users

This feature is a big step toward better privacy on WhatsApp.

As it becomes available to more users, connecting with others will become easier and safer without sharing personal contact details.
