Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi will be closed daily from 11:30 pm to 6:30 am for the next month.
The closure started on Sunday and is part of a major runway expansion project.
During this period, flight schedules will be slightly adjusted.
For example, an Indigo flight from Delhi originally arriving at 6:05 am has been rescheduled to 6:45 am.
Why the Airport is Closing
The runway expansion aims to lengthen the current runway from 2,745 meters to 4,075 meters, making it possible for larger aircraft like Boeing planes to land safely.
The project also includes the installation of multiple safety lights, which are crucial for landing, takeoff, and taxiing—especially at night or during low visibility.
Additional lights will ensure safe operations for all aircraft during these conditions.
What Travelers Should Know
Airport Director Puneet Gupta confirmed that the overnight suspension of flights is due to technical and security reasons.
This arrangement is set for one month but may be extended if needed.
Passengers are advised to check flight timings before traveling, as some arrivals and departures may be rescheduled during this period.
The runway expansion will make Varanasi Airport ready for larger planes and safer night operations, improving connectivity and passenger experience in the long run.
