Used car prices in Delhi have fallen sharply, with many vehicles now selling for 40–50% less than before.
This sudden drop is mainly due to new rules around “end-of-life” (EOL) vehicles.
The Delhi government had banned older petrol and diesel cars from running in the city—petrol cars older than 15 years
and diesel cars older than 10 years. Although these rules were later rolled back after public protests, the market had already taken a hit.
EOL Rule Impact: Nearly 60 lakh vehicles were affected by the restrictions.
Sharp Decline in Prices: Within just a few days, the value of second-hand cars dropped by almost half.
How Are Car Dealers and Buyers Responding?
Dealers Facing Heavy Losses
Car dealers in Delhi are struggling to cope with the falling prices. Many are being forced to sell cars at very low prices—sometimes at just one-fourth of their original value.
Forced Sales: Dealers have no choice but to accept low offers to clear their stock.
Luxury Cars Hit Too: Expensive cars that earlier sold for ₹6–7 lakh are now going for ₹4–5 lakh.
Popular Markets Affected: Areas like Karol Bagh, Preet Vihar, Pitampura, and Moti Nagar are all seeing price drops.
Buyers from Other States Bargain Hard
Used cars from Delhi are often sold to buyers in other states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Now, since buyers know that Delhi dealers are under pressure, they are bargaining harder.
Tough Negotiations: Buyers are demanding even lower prices than before.
Less Profit for Dealers: Dealers are making smaller profits due to heavy bargaining.
Challenges in Selling Cars Outside Delhi
Problems with Paperwork
To sell a used car in another state, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Transport Department is needed. But getting this certificate has become more difficult and time-consuming.
Delayed NOC: The process is slower and more complicated now.
Stuck Sales: Without the NOC, many cars cannot be sold outside Delhi.
What This Means for You
If You’re a Buyer:
Best Time to Buy: Used car prices are the lowest in years—great deals are available.
Lots of Options: From budget cars to luxury models, there’s a wide range to choose from.
Power to Bargain: Buyers have the upper hand and can negotiate even better prices.
If You’re a Seller:
Lower Selling Price: Be ready to get less money for your car than before.
Sell Quickly: Prices could fall further, so it may be wise to sell sooner.
Complete the Paperwork: Make sure you have all documents ready, especially if selling outside Delhi.
