US Ends Automatic Extension of Work Permits

Just weeks after increasing the H-1B visa fee to USD 100,000, the United States has introduced another major policy change.

Authorities have ended the automatic extension of work permits for foreign nationals — a move that is expected to affect a large number of Indian migrants and workers.

New Rules from the Department of Homeland Security

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the decision on Wednesday, stating it is part of efforts to tighten immigration controls.

The department said that all foreign nationals’ documents will be thoroughly verified before renewing their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs).

According to the DHS, the new rules took effect on October 30, 2025.

This means that foreign nationals applying for EAD renewal on or after this date will no longer get automatic extensions.

Quoting Joseph B. Edlow, Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the statement read:

“Ensuring proper scrutiny and verification before extending a foreign national’s employment authorization or document is a practical measure. Working in the United States is a privilege, not a right.”

Impact on Foreign Workers

This change is considered a major setback for foreigners living and working in the US.

The DHS has advised applicants to submit renewal applications at least 180 days before their work permit expires to avoid employment gaps.

However, the department also clarified that this new rule will not affect any work permits that were automatically extended before October 30, 2025.
