If you work in the private sector and Provident Fund (PF) is deducted from your salary, keeping your EPF nominee updated is very important.
Many people ignore this small step, but it plays a crucial role in ensuring that their savings reach the right person in case of an emergency.
The good news is that you can easily update or change your nominee online through the portal of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation.
There is no need to visit the PF office or get approval from your employer.
A nominee is the person who receives the EPF balance, interest, pension benefits, and insurance cover under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme if the account holder passes away.
Why Updating Your EPF Nominee Is Important
Keeping nominee details updated ensures that your family members can easily receive the EPF amount without legal complications.
If the nominee information is outdated or missing, it can delay the claim process for your family.
Submitting a new nomination on the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation portal automatically replaces the old one.
If you want to add more than one nominee — for example, your spouse and children — you will need to enter the details of all nominees again while submitting the new nomination.
Conditions and Documents Needed for e-Nomination
Before updating your nominee online, make sure the following details are ready:
Activated UAN (Universal Account Number) linked with Aadhaar
Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
Updated photo and address in your EPF profile
Aadhaar number of the nominee
Nominee’s bank account details and IFSC code
Scanned photograph of the nominee
Remember, if your UAN is not linked with Aadhaar, you will not be able to use the online e-nomination facility.
How to Change EPF Nominee Online
Updating your nominee is a simple process on the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal. Follow these steps:
Visit the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal and log in using your UAN and password.
After logging in, go to the ‘Manage’ section.
Select the ‘E-Nomination’ option.
Click on ‘Enter New Nomination’ and verify your profile details.
In the Family Declaration section, select whether the nominee is a family member or not.
Enter the nominee’s details such as Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, relationship, and bank details, and upload their photo.
If you want to add multiple nominees, enter their details separately and decide their share in EPF benefits.
Save the nomination and complete the process using e-Sign.
An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
After OTP verification, your new nominee details will be updated.
Who Can Be a Nominee in EPF?
According to EPF rules, nominees are usually chosen from family members.
These may include:
Husband or wife
Children
Dependent parents
Children of a deceased son
However, if an EPF member does not have a family at the time of nomination, they can nominate any individual.
Once the member gets married or has children, the nomination should be updated to include a family member.
Keeping your EPF nominee details updated may seem like a small task, but it ensures that your savings and benefits reach the right person without delays or legal hurdles.
