Electricity in Uttar Pradesh has become more expensive, hitting the common man’s budget.
Power rates have gone up by 1.24% due to a new fuel surcharge starting this financial year.
Electricity Bills Increased by 1.24%
Electricity companies in UP have surprised consumers by adding a fuel surcharge from April. Because of this, people will now have to pay higher electricity bills.
The Electricity Consumer Council has raised objections to this increase. From April onwards, monthly electricity bills will be higher.
People in Uttar Pradesh, already burdened by rising prices, are facing another financial hit. Starting this April, electricity will cost more.
This is the first time in five years that electricity rates have gone up in the state. Now, the electricity bill will include a fuel surcharge.
With this change, power rates will go up or down every month depending on fuel costs. Currently, the rate has increased by 1.24%.
Fuel Surcharge Behind Monthly Changes
UPPCL (Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited) has made this increase under the name of a fuel surcharge.
This means, just like petrol and diesel, electricity bills will now fluctuate every month.
In simple terms, the more electricity you use, the more you will be affected by these changes in your bill.
New Rates in Effect from April
The new surcharge is already in place from April. As summer heat rises, electricity use will also go up. Because of this, it’s very likely that people will receive higher electricity bills in the coming months.
This will increase the financial pressure on consumers. For example, in January, fuel worth ₹78.99 crore was used to generate electricity, including coal and other materials.
Based on this, the April bill will include a surcharge. Similarly, the May 2025 bill will reflect fuel use from February 2025. So, going forward, electricity bills will vary month by month.
Based on New Rules
Recently, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission gave electricity companies the authority to apply fuel and power purchase adjustment charges every month under the Multi Year Tariff Regulation-2025.
Using this new power, UPPCL is now charging consumers a fuel surcharge for the first time. However, the Electricity Consumer Council is against this move.
Council President Awadhesh Verma said that UPPCL still owes ₹33,122 crore to consumers and has added this new charge without returning that money. The Council plans to protest this decision.
