The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has updated the rules for Aadhaar enrolment and Aadhaar detail correction under the new Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) First Amendment Regulations, 2026.
The revised rules introduce a fresh list of documents that can now be used for Aadhaar updates and enrolment.
For existing Aadhaar holders, the biggest change comes under “List IV,” which clearly explains which documents are accepted for updating:
Name
Address
Date of Birth
Relationship details
Identity information
The update is expected to reduce confusion for people visiting Aadhaar centres for corrections or document updates.
What Details Can Aadhaar Holders Update?
Under the new rules, Aadhaar users can submit documents for:
Proof of Identity (POI)
Proof of Address (POA)
Proof of Relationship (POR)
Proof of Date of Birth (PDB)
However, not every document is valid for every type of update.
Some documents work only for address proof, while others can also be used for identity verification or date of birth updates.
Passport Remains the Strongest Aadhaar Document
A valid Indian passport continues to be one of the most powerful documents for Aadhaar updates.
It can be used for:
Identity proof
Address proof
Relationship proof
Date of birth proof
This means a passport alone can handle multiple Aadhaar correction requirements.
Which Other Documents Are Accepted?
UIDAI has included several commonly used documents in the updated list.
Ration Card / e-Ration Card
Accepted for:
Identity proof
Address proof
Relationship proof
Not valid for date of birth proof.

Marriage and Divorce Documents Now Recognised
The new rules also help people changing names after marriage or divorce.
Marriage Certificate
Marriage certificates issued by government authorities are now accepted for:
Identity proof
Address proof
Relationship proof
If the certificate does not contain a photograph, applicants may need to submit an old-name photo ID as additional proof.
Divorce Decree
A family court divorce order can also support identity-related updates.
Again, if the document lacks a photo, another old-name identity document may be required.
Documents Accepted for Date of Birth Correction
For date of birth updates, UIDAI now accepts:
Passport
Birth certificate
Educational marksheets and certificates
Pension-related documents
Certain government-issued ID cards
These documents must clearly show the applicant’s date of birth.
Bank Statements, Utility Bills Allowed for Address Update
For address changes, several commonly used documents are accepted.
These include:
Bank passbook
Post office passbook
Credit card statement
Electricity bill
Water bill
Mobile or broadband bill
Gas bill

Insurance policy documents
Most utility bills should generally not be older than three months.
Special Rules for Certain Categories
The updated Aadhaar rules also include special provisions for:
Transgender persons
Legal guardianship cases
Shelter home residents
Prison inmates
Family declaration-based address updates
For transgender persons, the identity certificate issued under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 is accepted for full name and gender updates.
Important Things Aadhaar Users Must Remember
UIDAI has also added some important conditions for document acceptance.
Documents:
Must be valid at the time of submission
Must belong to the applicant
Should have matching details across records
Must be verifiable
Should not be declared invalid by the issuing authority
Why These Aadhaar Rule Changes Matter
The updated rules bring more clarity for millions of Aadhaar users across India.
Earlier, many people faced confusion about which documents were accepted for corrections and updates.
The revised list now clearly defines acceptable documents for different situations.
The changes are especially useful for people dealing with:
Marriage-related name changes
Relocation and address updates
Birth date corrections
Gender transition
Legal guardianship matters
With Aadhaar linked to banking, mobile numbers, PAN, subsidies and government services, keeping Aadhaar details updated has become more important than ever.
