On September 5, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order introducing “reciprocal tariff rates.”
This allows the U.S. to cut tariffs to 0% on certain approved imports. The order will take effect on September 8.
Eligible Products
As per the order, items that qualify are those not grown, mined, or made in large amounts in the U.S. These include:
Graphite
Tungsten
Uranium
Gold bars
Special spices
Coffee
Antibiotics
Linked to Trade Agreements
Trump stated that these tariff breaks will depend on “the scope and value of commitments” from U.S. trade partners.
National interest and the ongoing national emergency on tariffs will also influence decisions. Final agreements with each country will decide which goods get 0% tariffs.
Japan Agreement as an Example
The U.S. recently made a “final agreement” with Japan, granting most-favored-nation status for semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, while keeping 0% tariffs on aircraft and their parts.
Experts say this is a clear example of how the new policy could shape future trade talks.
