The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking big steps to make toll payments completely digital across the country.

From April 10, 2026, cash payments at national highway tolls will no longer be accepted.

Now, tolls can be paid only through FASTag or UPI, aiming to reduce long queues and save time for commuters.

While FASTag was already in use, eliminating cash is the next step toward faster and more transparent toll collection.

How the New Payment System Works

Under this system, digital payments are the only option.

FASTag will be the preferred mode.

If your vehicle doesn’t have a FASTag, you can pay via UPI.

However, UPI payments will cost 1.25 times the normal toll fee, encouraging travelers to adopt FASTag.

This change ensures quicker toll processing and makes the system more transparent.

Changes in Toll Exemptions

The new rules also tighten exemptions:

Only vehicles with a discounted FASTag or an annual pass will be exempt from tolls.

Simply showing an ID card will no longer work to avoid toll charges.

Government vehicles must now have a discounted pass; misuse of government cards for personal toll benefits will be blocked.

These rules prevent misuse and ensure fairness for all travelers.

Annual Pass: A Better Option for Frequent Travelers

For those who travel regularly, an annual pass is now a convenient choice.

Instead of recharging frequently, you pay once for about 200 trips per year.

The cost has increased slightly from ₹3,000 to ₹3,075 from April 1, 2026.

This pass saves time and makes toll payments easier for daily highway users.
