In a recent update on Tesla’s entry into India, the company has confirmed that it will launch two of its electric vehicles in the country. Tesla is preparing to introduce the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3.
The company has finalized its first showroom location in BKC, Mumbai, and has applied for homologation for both of these models. If the process is successful, these cars will make their debut in India.
What is the homologation process?
The homologation process in India is managed by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India).
This process ensures that the vehicle meets Indian regulations related to quality, safety, performance, and emissions.
Once the vehicle passes all necessary tests, it is issued an Approval Certificate (TAC), confirming that it is fit to operate on Indian roads.
The showroom in BKC, Mumbai
Tesla has rented a 4,000 square foot space in BKC, where it plans to open its first showroom. Elon Musk is expected to pay a monthly rent of Rs 35 lakh for this space, which also offers ample parking.
According to a CRE Matrix document, the showroom will be located on the ground floor, near India’s first Apple store. The lease agreement was signed with Univco Properties on February 27 in Pune.
The company has paid a security deposit of Rs 2.11 crore and is paying Rs 881 per square foot for the space.
