Tesla Hiring Drivers to Test ‘Autopilot’ Before India Launch

Tesla, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, is getting ready to enter the Indian market.

Ahead of its official launch, Tesla is hiring drivers in Delhi and Mumbai to test its ‘Autopilot’ system.

Job Role: Prototype Vehicle Operator

The company is looking for skilled and experienced drivers to work as ‘Prototype Vehicle Operators’.

These drivers will test Tesla’s vehicles in real Indian road conditions and collect valuable driving data.

Responsibilities of Test Drivers

Selected drivers will have to drive for long hours in urban traffic and collect data using Tesla’s advanced sensors, including external cameras and computer vision systems.

They must be familiar with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features.

Tesla Vision and AI-Based Driving

In North America, Tesla uses Tesla Vision, a camera-based AI system that replaces radar. The same system will now be tested and fine-tuned for Indian road conditions.

Challenges in the Global EV Market

Tesla is facing increasing competition globally, especially from China’s BYD, which sells both electric and hybrid vehicles.

In recent years, BYD has overtaken Tesla in EV sales revenue. Tesla’s net profit fell by 71% in the first quarter of this year, showing the impact of this growing competition.

Showroom in Mumbai and Business Plans

Tesla’s first showroom in India is likely to open in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai.

The company recently leased around 4,000 square feet in BKC’s Maker Maxity building. Tesla may begin its operations in India in the second half of 2025.

Talks Between Elon Musk and PM Modi

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone call with Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO. Following this, Musk hinted at a possible visit to India soon.
