Tesla Launches in India: In India, buying a Tesla car now costs about the same as purchasing a 2BHK house.
So, if you had ₹60 lakh, what would you choose—a two-bedroom house in Delhi-NCR or a Tesla car? After a long wait, Tesla, the world’s largest electric car company, has finally launched in India.
Its first showroom has opened in Mumbai, and the price of Tesla cars in India starts at ₹60 lakh.
Should You Buy a Tesla?
Tesla cars in India are priced between ₹60 lakh and ₹75 lakh. But is it a smart choice for the middle class? Cars lose value over time, and India’s EV charging infrastructure is still limited. If you’re traveling to smaller cities, you might struggle to find charging stations.
Showroom Opens in Mumbai
Tesla officially entered the Indian market by opening its first showroom at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This marks Tesla’s entry into India’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
Model Y Price in India
The Tesla Model Y is expected to cost between ₹59.89 lakh and ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom). A 70% import duty is applied on its price. Two variants are expected in India:
Long Range RWD: Estimated range of 574 km; accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 5.4 seconds; expected price ₹59.89 lakh.
Long Range AWD: Slightly lower range of 526 km, but quicker acceleration—0 to 96 km/h in 4.6 seconds; expected price up to ₹75 lakh.
Price in the US
In the US, the Model Y Long Range AWD is priced at $41,490 (around ₹35.7 lakh).
The RWD version costs $37,490 (around ₹32.2 lakh).
Due to high import duties, Tesla cars cost almost double in India compared to the US.
Tesla Model Y in India
The first Tesla model in India is likely to be the Model Y SUV, brought in as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Tesla has already shipped about $1 million (₹8.3 crore) worth of cars and accessories from China and the US to India, including six Model Y units.
Tesla’s Plans for India
Tesla has set up a 24,566 sq ft experience center in Mumbai and is planning to open another showroom in Delhi. Although there is no local manufacturing yet, Tesla may start assembling cars locally through CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits in the future.
Impact on the Premium EV Market
Tesla’s arrival is expected to shake up the premium EV segment in India. Though its price is out of reach for the average buyer, it could become a status symbol for luxury and tech enthusiasts.
