Tata Motors has launched its new Nexon CNG in India. The car was first revealed at the 2024 Bharat Mobility event and had been spotted multiple times during testing.
Following the launches of the Curve EV and Curve ICE, Tata has now introduced the Nexon CNG.
The CNG variant starts from the base trim, offered at a competitive price. Let’s explore its details further.
Tata Nexon CNG
Tata Motors, India’s leading electric car manufacturer, is advancing its green mission with the launch of the Nexon CNG.
This is the country’s first CNG car equipped with a turbocharged engine. It also becomes the first vehicle in India to offer four fuel options at the same time.
Tata Nexon CNG Price
The Tata Nexon CNG is available at a starting price of Rs 8.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and offers eight trim levels: Smart (O), Smart+, Smart+ S, Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative+, and Fearless+ S.
The highest variant, the Nexon CNG Fearless+ S, is priced at Rs 14.59 lakh (ex-showroom).
Engine and performance
This is Tata Motors’ first turbocharged CNG car, featuring the company’s dual-cylinder CNG technology.
It is powered by a 1.2L 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing 118 hp and 170 Nm of torque when using petrol. Performance is slightly reduced with CNG, generating 99 bhp and 170 Nm of torque.
The twin-cylinder i-CNG system includes two 30L cylinders located under the boot floor, maintaining full boot space and offering advantages over a single-cylinder setup.
It features an automatic switch between the advanced ECU and fuel, allowing the car to start directly in CNG mode.
Additionally, the i-CNG technology automatically switches to petrol mode in case of a gas leak. For extra safety, the Tata Nexon includes a micro switch that turns off the ignition.
Exterior and Interior
The design of the Nexon CNG closely resembles its petrol and diesel models, featuring only the i-CNG badging on the boot lid.
Inside, it includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless phone charger, a two-spoke steering wheel, and keyless entry.
Similar to the Tata Nexon EV, the Nexon CNG recently received a 5-star safety rating from the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP).
The CNG variant includes features such as six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, and EBD.
Additionally, it offers Isofix child seat mounts, an electronic stability program, auto-dimming IRVMs, and a rear defogger.
Who will it compete with?
The Tata Nexon CNG competes with other sub-4m SUVs like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG.
It will also face competition from the CNG variants of the Hyundai Exter, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder within the same price segment.
