Biogas Initiative for a Carbon-Neutral India

As part of its broader vision for a carbon-neutral society in India, Suzuki is also focusing on the biogas business, the company said in a regulatory filing by Maruti Suzuki India.

The plan involves converting manure from India’s 300 million cattle into biogas—a carbon-neutral fuel—as well as organic fertiliser.

Use of Biogas in CNG Vehicles

Suzuki stated that the biogas produced will be used directly in CNG vehicles, which already represent one in every three cars sold by Maruti Suzuki in India.

This approach will support both environmental sustainability and the growing demand for clean energy.

Biogas Plants to Begin Operating in 2025

To support the project, Suzuki is partnering with India’s dairy cooperatives to set up biogas production plants.

These facilities are scheduled to begin operations in phases from 2025.

Boosting Rural Incomes and National Goals

The initiative will also benefit rural communities by purchasing cow dung, providing an additional source of income for farmers.

This aligns with India’s larger goals of achieving self-reliance in energy and fertiliser production, the company noted.

Commitment to Growth and Sustainability

“Suzuki will continue to advance its biogas business in step with India’s robust growth, working toward the realisation of a carbon-neutral society,” the company said in its statement.
