As Diwali approaches, many investors are wondering whether the Indian stock markets will remain open today, Monday, October 20, 2025.

Despite some states celebrating Diwali Lakshmi Pujan today, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will operate as usual.

The markets will follow their regular trading schedule from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, with a pre-opening session between 9:00 am and 9:15 am.

Muhurat Trading on October 21, 2025

The official Diwali market holiday will be observed tomorrow, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, in celebration of Lakshmi Puja.

However, this day will also feature the special Muhurat Trading session—a one-hour symbolic trading period marking the start of the new Samvat year.

The Muhurat Trading session will run from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, with a 15-minute pre-open session from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm.

Investors can also make post-close modifications until 2:55 pm on both exchanges.

This long-standing tradition, which began in 1957, is seen as an auspicious time to begin new investments and invite prosperity for the coming year.

Even small investors can participate—there’s no minimum or maximum order size, allowing anyone to buy a single share or more based on their goals.

Settlement and Upcoming Holidays

Investors should note that all equity delivery orders placed today (October 20) and during the Muhurat session tomorrow (October 21) will be settled on Thursday, October 23, 2025, since Wednesday, October 22, is also a market holiday for Diwali Balipratipada.

Looking ahead, the next market holiday will fall on November 5, 2025, for Prakash Gurpurab of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, while the final holiday of the year will be on December 25, 2025, for Christmas.

MCX Schedule During Diwali

The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed on October 21 and 22 for Diwali Laxmi Puja and Balipratipada.

However, it will reopen for the evening session on October 22 and conduct its own Muhurat Trading session on October 21.

Investors planning trades during the festive season should mark these dates carefully and use the Muhurat session to welcome wealth and good fortune into their portfolios.
