Why the Markets Are Closed: The Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Prakash Gurpurb, celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

The festival falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Kartik, which means the date changes every year as per the lunar calendar.

The day holds great spiritual and cultural significance.

Across India, devotees mark the occasion with prayers, processions, and community feasts (langars) held at gurdwaras.

Beyond its religious importance, Guru Nanak Jayanti is also recognized as one of the major public holidays in the stock market calendar.
