Good news for air travellers! Beyond web check-in and Digi Yatra, a new facility will soon make flying even easier.
SpiceJet has started a paperless boarding process at Shillong Airport.
With this system, passengers will receive their boarding pass directly on WhatsApp, making air travel quicker and smoother with just one click.
This step is not only convenient for passengers but also environment-friendly, as it reduces the need for paper.
SpiceJet claims that it is the first airline to offer WhatsApp-based boarding passes at airport check-in counters.
Faster Check-in and Greener Travel
SpiceJet passengers checking in at the airport will no longer need printed boarding passes. Instead, they will instantly get them on WhatsApp.
This new initiative will help in reducing waiting times at counters and also promote eco-friendly travel by cutting down paper usage.
To understand the impact, even with Digi Yatra and web check-in available, more than 90 lakh paper boarding passes were printed at Indian airports till June 2025, leading to about 6 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Powered by Special Web Departure System
This digital boarding facility is made possible by SpiceJet’s Web Departure Control System (WEBDCS).
It is a browser-based platform that allows check-in staff to send boarding passes via WhatsApp and email using a tablet or computer.
Even baggage tags will now be sent through SMS. This makes the entire check-in process faster, smoother, and more efficient for both staff and travellers.
Expansion Across India Soon
SpiceJet plans to roll out this paperless boarding facility at other airports across the country.
According to the airline’s CEO GP Gupta, the goal is to enhance passenger experience while also protecting the environment.
After its successful start in Shillong, this service will soon be available at more airports in India.
