Most people in India use smartphones. Last year, private telecom companies raised the prices of recharge plans.
Now, according to a report, there is a chance that these plans might get more expensive again.
Major telecom companies like Jio, Airtel, and Vi are expected to increase their recharge rates by November or December this year.
If this happens, both prepaid and postpaid users will have to pay more. This will directly affect the common people, especially those who try to keep their mobile expenses low.
Past Increases and Future Plans
According to brokerage firm Bernstein, this price hike is part of a long-term plan that could continue until 2027.
Telecom companies believe that raising prices will help them earn more and improve their network quality. Last year too, the companies raised prices.
At that time, they said that although 5G services had been launched, the plan rates were not increased, so a hike was needed. If the rates go up again this year, it could cause trouble for many users.
Reasons Behind the Price Hike
The main reason for the price increase is the high cost of expanding the 5G network and other technical developments.
Companies are investing a lot in buying spectrum and upgrading their infrastructure. To cover these costs, they are passing the burden on to customers.
Currently, people spend around ₹200 for a 28-day recharge. If prices rise again, it will become even harder for poor and middle-class users to afford mobile services.
