‘Sitaare Zameen Par’: Aamir Khan has reportedly turned down a massive ₹120 crore offer from Amazon Prime Video for the OTT rights of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par.
Earlier, he had also rejected a similar offer from Netflix. According to sources, Aamir’s decision is part of a new strategy to change how movies are released.
Unlike most films that hit OTT platforms soon after their theatrical run, Aamir wants to take a different approach.
Aiming to Bring Audiences Back to Theatres
Film trade analyst Komal Nahta shared that Aamir refused the OTT deal because he wants the film to be released online only after at least eight weeks of its theatrical release.
The idea behind this is to encourage people to go to theatres instead of waiting to watch the movie at home.
Aamir believes that quick OTT releases are one of the main reasons why theatre audiences have dropped in recent years.
By delaying the digital release, he hopes more viewers will prefer watching the film on the big screen. If successful, his approach could influence other filmmakers to follow the same model.
YouTube Release Could Be Next
Sitaare Zameen Par won’t be available on Amazon Prime Video or any major streaming platform right after its release.
However, Aamir Khan is planning to release the film on YouTube later — but as a paid viewing option.
This gives him full control over when the film becomes available online, something that’s not possible when rights are sold to large OTT platforms.
A Consistent Strategy
Interestingly, Amazon Prime Video wasn’t the first to face rejection. Aamir had already refused a big offer from Netflix for the same film.
Despite the money involved, he has stayed committed to his unique release strategy.
Sitaare Zameen Par is all set to hit theatres on June 20.
