Scammers Targeting WhatsApp users Without OTP or Links

WhatsApp usage has increased rapidly in recent times. From chatting to sharing files, people use it for almost every important task.

But many users are unaware that scammers are actively monitoring social media apps.

The government has now issued a warning advisory that highlights a serious risk: cybercriminals are hijacking WhatsApp accounts using a simple trick that does not require an OTP or any suspicious link.

With just one message, your entire WhatsApp account can be compromised.

The Home Ministry’s I4C agency has alerted users that fraudsters are offering quick money to trick people.

Using this method, they are not only gaining control of WhatsApp accounts but also emptying the bank accounts of thousands of victims.

According to the advisory, these hacked accounts are used as rented “mule WhatsApp accounts,” which can then be used to target other people.

How Scammers Hijack WhatsApp Accounts

QR Code Trick on WhatsApp

The I4C agency reported that scammers trick users by sending a QR code on WhatsApp.

They claim that scanning it will bring profitable returns, but the QR code is actually a WhatsApp Web login code.

Once scanned, all WhatsApp access and data are transferred to the scammers. They then use the victim’s account to deceive more people.

Added to Fake Groups

After gaining control, cybercriminals add victims to fake investment groups. These groups show attractive offers to lure people. Some accounts even use celebrity photos to appear authentic.

Use of Mule WhatsApp Accounts

I4C stated that mule WhatsApp accounts are used for large-scale scams such as phishing, payment fraud, and recruiting more victims.

Once scammers take over an account, they send fake links, ask for money from contacts, and trap new people into similar scams.

Risk to Your Family

If scammers gain access to your WhatsApp, your family is also at risk. Criminals can easily trick parents, siblings, and relatives by pretending to be you.

They may demand money or try to steal bank details by asking for OTPs.

How to Protect Your WhatsApp Account

You can identify fake accounts easily—most scammers offer simple tasks with big money rewards. They also create a sense of urgency so that you act without thinking.

If you have given access to your WhatsApp accidentally, remove it immediately by following these steps:

Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.

Tap Linked Devices.

Check all logged-in sessions.

If you find any unknown or suspicious device, tap on it and log out.

Following these steps will help you keep your WhatsApp account safe and protected from scammers.
