The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has increased the renewal fees for vehicles that are over 20 years old.
This step is aimed at reducing the number of old and polluting vehicles on the roads. As per the latest update, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) older than 20 years has gone up from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.
Increased Fees for Different Vehicle Types
The new rates apply to various types of vehicles:
Motorcycles (20+ years): ₹2,000 (earlier ₹1,000)
Three-wheelers & quadricycles (20+ years): ₹5,000 (earlier ₹3,500)
Imported two/three-wheelers: ₹20,000
Imported cars (four or more wheels): ₹80,000
This change follows a draft rule proposed in February and made official on August 21.
Why This Change Was Made
The transport ministry has been working to reduce pollution and improve road safety by phasing out older vehicles.
In October 2021, MoRTH had already changed the registration and renewal fees for different types of vehicles.
The recent fee hike is part of the government’s broader plan to promote the scrapping of end-of-life vehicles.
Supreme Court’s Role
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court told authorities not to take strict action against diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old in Delhi-NCR.
The court made this decision after the Delhi government argued that the policy should also consider how much a vehicle is actually used, not just its age.
Moving Towards Cleaner Transport
By making it more expensive to keep old vehicles on the road, the government hopes to encourage people to switch to newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
This step supports India’s long-term goals of promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and using ethanol-blended fuels for a greener future.
