Jio and SpaceX to Expand Starlink’s Reach in India

On March 12, 2025, Reliance Jio announced its partnership with SpaceX to launch Starlink services in India.

This announcement comes just a day after Jio’s competitor, Bharti Airtel, revealed a similar agreement with SpaceX.

However, both partnerships depend on government approval for Starlink services in India.

Through this collaboration, Jio and SpaceX aim to explore ways to introduce Starlink internet to the Indian market efficiently and make it more accessible to customers.

Starlink to Be Integrated with Jio’s Network

Jio plans to integrate Starlink services with its existing broadband offerings, JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring high-speed internet is available even in the most challenging locations.

As the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic, Jio’s partnership with SpaceX, a leader in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology, will further boost India’s digital transformation.

Statements from Jio and SpaceX Leaders

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, said:
“Our goal is to provide fast and affordable internet to every Indian.

This partnership with SpaceX is a historic step towards seamless broadband connectivity across the country.”

Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO of SpaceX, stated:
“We are excited to support Jio’s digital expansion in India.

We look forward to securing the necessary approvals soon, so we can provide high-speed internet to individuals, businesses, and communities across India.”

Challenges in Getting Starlink Approved

Despite this major collaboration, government approval remains the biggest hurdle for launching Starlink in India.

As of now, the Department of Telecom and India’s space regulator (IN-SPACe) have not yet permitted SpaceX to roll out Starlink services.

Previously, data localization and security standards were a roadblock to Starlink’s launch in India.

However, reports suggest that SpaceX has now agreed to comply with Indian regulations, which may help clear the way for approval.
