The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently shared important information regarding the Rs 2000 notes.
Since the government announced the ban on these notes on May 19, 2023, most of the 2000 rupee notes have been returned to the banks.
As of now, about 98 percent of the total Rs 2000 notes have been deposited.
However, people are still holding on to Rs 7000 crore worth of 2000 rupee notes, which have not yet been returned to the banks.
Timeline and Facilities for Depositing Notes
On May 19, 2023, the government decided to discontinue the Rs 2000 note. At the time, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were circulating in the market.
By October 31, 2024, approximately Rs 3.49 lakh crore of these notes had already been deposited in banks.
To help people exchange these notes, the government made provisions at 19 regional RBI offices and all banks.
This gave people ample time to deposit or exchange their 2000 rupee notes. The RBI had set a deadline of September 30, 2023, for exchanging the notes.
However, many people still had the notes and continued to visit RBI offices or send them by post after the deadline.
