The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced an important facility for Indian travelers going abroad. Now, passengers can exchange Indian rupees for foreign currency directly at forex counters located inside the departure area of international airports.

This new update makes the process faster and more convenient than before.

Earlier, this service was limited, but now it has been expanded so that more travelers can access it easily.

Currency Exchange Now Available After Security Check

As per the new RBI rule, travelers can exchange money after completing immigration and customs checks. This means currency exchange is now possible inside the security hold area or duty-free zone of the airport.

With this change, if you forget or are unable to exchange currency before reaching the airport, you can still do it just before boarding your flight. This is especially helpful for last-minute travel plans.

What Was the Earlier Rule?

Previously, forex counters in these restricted airport zones had limited access and were mainly meant for specific categories of travelers. Many passengers faced difficulties due to limited availability and access.

Now, the RBI has updated the guidelines, allowing more flexibility and better access for all Indian residents traveling abroad.

Who Will Benefit the Most?

This new facility is highly beneficial for travelers who:

Need foreign currency at the last moment

Forgot to exchange money before reaching the airport

Were unable to find a forex service earlier

Now, they can complete the currency exchange process easily within the airport itself.

The RBI has also instructed all authorized money changers to clearly inform customers about this updated facility.

Rule Under FEMA 1999

This important change has been implemented under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, which regulates foreign currency transactions in India.

With this update, RBI aims to make foreign travel smoother and more convenient for Indian citizens.
