To ensure a smoother and more comfortable journey, Indian Railways has made an important change in sleeper coach rules.
New guidelines have been issued for the use of middle berths, and following them is now mandatory for all passengers.
According to the Railways, the middle berth can be opened only between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am.
After 6:00 am, it must be folded back so that passengers on the lower berth can sit, move freely, and avoid inconvenience.
Why This Rule Was Needed
Many passengers open the middle berth early in the evening, which blocks lower berth passengers from sitting comfortably.
This often leads to arguments inside the coach.
To prevent such disputes, Railways has clearly stated that lower berth passengers have full rights to use their seat until 10 pm.
Similarly, the middle berth must be folded by 6 am so that everyone can use the shared space properly.
This change aims to bring more discipline, comfort, and order to sleeper travel.
Railway Staff Will Enforce the Rule
Ticket examiners (TTEs) and coach staff have been instructed to inform passengers about the new timing and ensure strict compliance.
This rule applies to all mail, express, and superfast trains.
If any passenger refuses to follow the rule or creates inconvenience, they can be reported immediately.
How to File a Complaint
Divisional Railway Manager Anurag Tripathi (Jodhpur Division) shared that passengers can lodge complaints through:
Helpline 139
Rail Madad App (for real-time complaints)
After a complaint is registered, the TTE or railway staff will take quick action.
What Happens If Someone Breaks the Rule?
If a passenger opens the middle berth before 10 pm, the lower berth passenger can ask them to close it.
If a disagreement continues, the TTE will intervene and take action.
This rule promotes cooperation among passengers and ensures everyone gets equal comfort.
New Middle Berth Timings
10 pm to 6 am: Middle berth can be opened (sleeping time).
After 6 am: Middle berth must be closed (sitting time).
In case of violation: Passengers can file a complaint.
Railways emphasizes that a pleasant journey is possible only through mutual respect and cooperation among passengers.
