If you’re planning a trip by train next year, here’s what you need to know.

New Rules for Lower Berth Allocation

One of the most common passenger complaints has been about not getting a lower berth even after selecting it during online booking.

To address this, Indian Railways has made several improvements.

Senior citizens, women above 45 years, and pregnant women will continue to get priority for lower berths under the computerized reservation system—depending on availability.

If an eligible passenger doesn’t get a lower berth during booking, the TTE can reassign one mid-journey if it becomes available.

There’s also a helpful new option in online booking—“Book Only If Lower Berth Is Available.”

Selecting this ensures your ticket will only be confirmed if a lower berth is assigned.

Otherwise, the booking won’t go through—perfect for passengers who don’t want to travel without a lower berth.

Railways has also launched the RailOne app, which allows users to book both reserved and unreserved tickets easily.

It combines all railway services in one place, simplifying the booking process for everyone.

Fixed Sleeping Hours and Updated Reservation Period

Railways has standardized sleeping hours in reserved coaches—from 10 PM to 6 AM.

During these hours, passengers can rest on their allotted berths. In the daytime, everyone must share seats, and RAC passengers will share the side lower and upper berths until night.

Another key change is the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).

Earlier, passengers could book tickets up to 120 days in advance, but now this has been reduced to 60 days.

This move is expected to minimize cancellations and streamline the system.

The Bottom Line

These rule changes are part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to make travel more convenient, digital, and transparent.

From improved berth allocation to reduced booking periods, the focus is clearly on enhancing passenger comfort and satisfaction.

So, the next time you plan your journey, make sure to use the new features wisely for a smoother and hassle-free experience.
