On September 21 at 5 pm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and announced the start of the “GST Savings Festival” from September 22.
His address came just before the new GST rates were implemented.
Everyday Goods Become Cheaper
Big companies making daily essential items have cut their prices to pass on the GST benefits to consumers.
From Monday, items like soap, powder, coffee, biscuits, diapers, ghee, and oil have become cheaper.
Companies have also released new maximum retail prices (MRPs) for products like shampoo, toothpaste, razors, after-shave lotions, and baby diapers starting September 22.
Well-known brands like Amul and Patanjali have also reduced their prices. With the new rates, even cars, bikes, and other vehicles have become cheaper. Auto companies have announced their updated price lists too.
Cigarettes and Tobacco Get Costlier
Earlier this month, the GST Council reduced the number of GST rate slabs from four to two.
Now, tax rates will mainly be 5% and 18%, while luxury products will attract a special 40% rate.
The new rates came into effect on September 22, except for cigarettes, tobacco, and related items, which have become more expensive.
