Punjab Finance Minister approves Sixth Pay Commission

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has approved the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations for employees of aided educational institutions across the state.

This decision aims to benefit a wide range of employees working in these institutions.

Examination of Financial Data and Proposal Process

According to a statement by the Finance Minister, administrative departments will scrutinize the financial records of aided schools and colleges over the past three years.

This step is crucial to accurately assess financial losses and prepare a detailed proposal outlining the financial implications.

Once the administrative departments submit their proposals,

the Finance Department will review and approve the financial aspects for these institutions.

Benefits to Employees and Recent Developments

In a government press release, Cheema highlighted that this decision will particularly benefit employees of aided schools and colleges under various departments,

including School Education, Technical Education, and Industrial Training.

It also covers non-teaching staff under the Higher Education Department and retired employees of aided schools.

Earlier in December 2023, the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, announced a 4% increase in dearness allowance for government employees, raising it from 34% to 38%.

This adjustment, effective from December 1, 2023,

has added a financial burden of Rs 1100 crore to the state treasury.

Benefits and Coverage

In a government press release, Minister Cheema highlighted that the decision will primarily benefit employees of aided schools and colleges under various departments including School Education, Technical Education, and Industrial Training.

It also extends to non-teaching staff of higher education institutions and retired employees of aided schools.
