Premium Zomato and Swiggy Members Now Charged Extra for Delivery

Zomato Gold and Swiggy One Surcharge: Food delivery platforms Zomato (now called Eternal) and Swiggy have removed the benefit of surge fee waivers for their premium users during rainy weather. This update was revealed through recent changes in both apps.

Now, users with Zomato Gold or Swiggy One subscriptions will also need to pay extra delivery charges during rains—something that was earlier only applied to regular users.

This move comes as both companies are under pressure from investors to improve their financial performance.

Current Financial Status of Zomato (Eternal) and Swiggy

Zomato’s parent company, Eternal, saw its net profit drop by 78% year-on-year to ₹39 crore in the March 2025 quarter.

This is a sharp decline compared to ₹175 crore in March 2024 and ₹59 crore in December 2024.

Meanwhile, Swiggy’s financial losses have grown. The company reported a net loss of ₹1,081.18 crore in March 2025, up over 94% from ₹554.77 crore in March 2024.

However, the main reason behind these losses is heavy investment in their quick commerce segment.

Both Zomato and Swiggy are using profits from food delivery to cover these losses and are trying to increase earnings from food orders to support their quick commerce businesses.

Platform Fees Have Increased Five Times in Recent Months

In recent months, both companies have been trying to increase earnings from every order.

One way they’ve done this is by raising the platform fee. What used to be ₹2 per order has now increased to ₹10 in most cases.

To understand the impact of this, consider that both platforms handle over 20 lakh (2 million) food orders daily.

At ₹10 per order, this brings in an extra income of at least ₹2 crore per day for each company.
