The Telangana government has made a big change to Rule 81 of the Telangana Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, updating the fees and process for reserving premium vehicle registration numbers.
From now on, applications must be made only through the Transport Department’s online portal (www.transport.telangana.gov.in). No offline applications will be accepted.
This move to a fully digital system aims to reduce manual work, prevent corruption, and make the reservation process smoother.
New Six-Tier Fee System
The updated rules introduce six fee levels based on how popular or special the numbers are:
Tier 1 (₹1,50,000): 1, 9, 9999
Tier 2 (₹1,00,000): 99, 100, 786, 888, 999
Tier 3 (₹50,000): 33, 111, 555, 666, 777, 1000
Tier 4 (₹20,000): 1234, 2023, 2525, 3333, 4444, 5555, 6666, 7777, 8888, 9090
Tier 5 (₹10,000): 123, 143, 202, 345, 789, 987
Tier 6 (₹2,000): All other numbers
Online Auction for Popular Numbers
For numbers with many applicants, the government will hold an online auction. Bidders have two hours to compete, and the highest bidder wins the number. Those who lose the auction will forfeit 10% of the fee paid.
If the winner does not register a vehicle within 30 days, the reservation will be canceled and the entire fee will be lost.
More Transparency and Revenue
This reform shows Telangana’s focus on digital governance and transparency. Officials expect that the online process will reduce corruption and increase state income through premium services.
The government is also asking the public to give feedback on these changes within 15 days of the official Gazette publication to include wider views before final approval.
This step makes Telangana one of the leading states in digital transport services while meeting the rising demand for prestige vehicle numbers.
