Digital payments in India are becoming even easier.
PhonePe has launched a new biometric authentication feature that allows users to approve Unified Payments Interface transactions using fingerprint or face recognition.
This means users no longer need to enter their UPI PIN every time they make a payment.
Instead, they can simply verify their identity using the biometric security already available on their smartphone.
The new feature aims to make digital payments faster, easier, and more secure for millions of users across India.
How Biometric UPI Payments Work
With this update, PhonePe users can confirm transactions using their phone’s built-in fingerprint scanner or face recognition system.
The process is simple. When making a payment, the app will ask for biometric verification.
Once the fingerprint or face scan is successful, the payment is approved instantly.
For now, this feature works for UPI payments up to ₹5,000.
If the payment amount is higher than this limit, users will still need to enter their UPI PIN for extra security.
The biometric authentication feature can be used for several common payment activities, such as:
Sending money to contacts
Paying merchants using QR codes
Making online purchases
Checking bank account balances
Faster and More Convenient Payments
One of the biggest benefits of biometric payments is speed.
Instead of typing a four- or six-digit PIN, users can complete a payment with a single touch or quick face scan.
This is especially helpful in busy places like markets, metro stations, or retail stores where quick payments are important.
It can also help people who often forget their PINs, including elderly users or those who are new to digital payment apps.
Security and Privacy Measures
Even though the system is designed for convenience, security remains a top priority.
PhonePe uses device-level biometric authentication, which means the fingerprint or face data is stored securely on the user’s smartphone rather than on external servers.
This data is protected by the phone’s secure hardware system.
If the biometric scan fails due to lighting issues or sensor problems, the app automatically switches back to the traditional PIN authentication method.
Availability and Future Expansion
At the moment, the biometric payment feature is mainly available on Android smartphones that support fingerprint or face unlock.
However, PhonePe is expected to bring the same feature to iOS devices in the near future.
As biometric technology becomes more common, experts believe similar features may soon appear in other UPI apps.
This could make digital payments in India faster and more seamless than ever before.
