Making UPI payments just got even easier.
Digital payments platform PhonePe has introduced a new feature that allows users to pay using their fingerprint or face recognition — without entering a UPI PIN for smaller transactions.
Similar biometric features are already available on Amazon Pay and Slice, but PhonePe is now rolling it out at a large scale.
Pay With Your Fingerprint or Face
With this new feature, users can complete UPI payments of up to ₹5,000 using biometric authentication.
If your phone already has fingerprint or face lock enabled, the payment will be verified instantly using that.
However, for transactions above ₹5,000, entering your UPI PIN will still be mandatory for security reasons.
This move is designed to make payments faster and more secure.
Why This Feature Matters
Entering a UPI PIN in crowded places can be risky.
There is always a chance of “shoulder surfing,” where someone nearby sees your PIN.
Biometric payments reduce that risk.
They also lower the chances of failed transactions caused by typing the wrong PIN or forgetting it.
According to PhonePe Co-founder and CTO Rahul Chari, UPI payments up to ₹5,000 are now “as easy as unlocking your phone.”
He said the feature uses hardware-level security built into smartphones and aims to make digital payments simpler and more accessible for millions of users.
How to Activate Biometric Payments on PhonePe
Follow these steps:
Open the PhonePe app.
Go to Profile.
Tap on Manage Payments.
Select the Biometric Pay option.
Turn on biometric authentication for your bank account.
Confirm once using your UPI PIN and biometric.
The feature is currently available for Android users and is expected to roll out to iOS users soon.
With this update, paying through UPI could soon feel as simple as unlocking your phone.
