Now you will no longer be able to make most UPI payments by manually entering a UPI ID or mobile number.
To make digital payments faster and more secure, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a major change.
Until now, while making online payments, users had to manually type their UPI ID or mobile number. This method was known as “UPI Collect.” However, this option is now being discontinued in most cases.
According to reports, instead of typing a UPI ID or mobile number, users will now see options to directly click on the payment app icon or scan a QR code.
This change will make payments easier and improve online security. The new rule came into effect on 28 February 2026.
What Is UPI Collect?
UPI Collect was a method of online payment where the buyer manually entered their UPI ID or mobile number (if the mobile number was linked to their UPI ID).
After this, the website or app sent a payment request to the user’s payment app. The user then opened their payment app and entered their UPI PIN to complete the transaction.
It was called “UPI Collect” because the receiving app or website sent a request to the payment app to collect the money.
How Will You Make Payments Now?
From 28 February 2026, the process has become much simpler in most places.
Now, when making a payment, you will see either:
A UPI app icon that you can click
A QR code that you can scan
If you click the UPI app icon, your payment app will open directly on your phone.
If you choose the QR code option, you can scan it and complete the payment quickly.
This new system is designed to make transactions faster and safer.
Where Will the Old Method Still Work?
UPI Collect has not been completely removed. It will still be available in certain situations:
1. Stock Market and IPO Investments
If you invest in the stock market or apply for an IPO, you will still need to enter your UPI ID or mobile number manually.
2. Apple and iPhone Users
If you make a purchase through a mobile app or browser on an iPhone or any iOS device, the old UPI Collect system may still be used.
3. Managing Old Auto-Payments
If you have already set up an auto-payment, you will need to manually enter your UPI ID or mobile number to modify or stop it.
4. International Payments
If you are making a payment to an international website or a business outside your country, the UPI Collect method will continue to work.
