For many Indian travellers, one big question always comes up: How many countries can we visit without a visa?
Visa-free access is often seen as a sign of a passport’s global strength.
And now, there’s good news.
The number of countries Indians can travel to without a visa has increased from 55 to 56.
So, what changed? Let’s break it down.
India’s Passport Ranking Improves
According to the latest rankings by the Henley & Partners, India’s passport has climbed to 75th place in 2026.
Last year, it was ranked 85th. At the beginning of 2026, it stood at 80th.
Now, it has jumped 10 places compared to last year.
This improvement reflects better global mobility for Indian citizens.
As per the Henley Passport Index, Indian passport holders can now enter 56 countries either visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access.
That’s one more country than January’s list.
Which Country Was Added?
The latest update brings back The Gambia to the visa-free list for Indian travellers.
In January, the number had dropped to 55 because of policy changes by two countries:
Iran
Bolivia
Iran suspended visa-free entry for Indians in November 2025 due to concerns related to fraud and human trafficking.
Travellers now need prior approval.
Bolivia shifted to an e-visa system, meaning Indians must apply online before travelling.
Earlier in 2025, Indians had access to 57 countries. So while there have been ups and downs, the latest count now stands at 56.
How the Passport Rankings Work
The Henley Passport Index evaluates around 200 passports against 227 destinations worldwide.
It gives points only for:
Visa-free entry
Visa-on-arrival
Visitor permits
Basic electronic travel authorisations (e-TAs)
If a country requires a pre-approved visa or a full e-visa process, it does not count toward the score.
In the 2026 rankings:
Singapore tops the list with access to 192 countries.
Japan and South Korea follow with 187 destinations.
Sweden and the United Arab Emirates offer access to 186 countries.
The United States ranks 10th with 179 destinations.
What This Means for Indian Travellers
While India is still far from the top positions, the steady rise in ranking is a positive sign.
An increase from 55 to 56 visa-free destinations may seem small.
But it shows gradual improvement in India’s global travel access.
For Indian passport holders dreaming of international trips, every added country counts.
