Getting a PAN card is about to become a bit more detailed.
The Income Tax Department has announced new rules for PAN card applications starting April 1, 2026.
The goal is simple — make the verification process stricter and more accurate.
While the current process is quick and easy, things will soon require a bit more documentation.
If you’re planning to apply, you still have time to use the old process until March 31, 2026.
After that, the new system will fully take over.
Aadhaar Alone Won’t Be Enough Anymore
One of the biggest changes is related to the Aadhaar card.
Until now, Aadhaar worked as a complete proof — identity, address, and date of birth.
But from April 1, 2026, that will change. Aadhaar alone will no longer be enough to get a PAN card.
Applicants will now need to submit extra documents to verify their date of birth. These can include:
Birth certificate
Voter ID
10th class certificate
Passport
Driving license
This step is being added to improve accuracy and reduce errors in the system.
New PAN Application Forms Introduced
The application process is also being reorganized.
The Income Tax Department has replaced the old common form with new category-based forms. This means different applicants will now fill out different forms:
Form 93 – For Indian citizens
Form 94 – For Indian companies and entities
Form 95 – For foreign citizens
Form 96 – For foreign entities
This change will help keep records clearer and make tax processes smoother in the future.
What Happens to Existing Applications?
If you’ve already applied, there’s no need to worry.
Applications submitted before April 1, 2026, will continue under the old rules, even if they are still being processed after the deadline.
You won’t need to fill out new forms or submit extra documents.
However, any application made on or after April 1, 2026, must strictly follow the new rules and requirements.
Should You Apply Now or Later?
If you want a simpler process, it’s better to apply before March 31, 2026 and take advantage of the current system.
After that, getting a PAN card will still be possible—but it will require more documents and a stricter verification process.
